They are scared that their friends will make fun of them if they accept weird people like stargirl. so they just go with the crowd when they hear that stargirl is a freak!
I think they are afriad of what people will think. Being seen with a weird or strange person other people will perseive them as a weird or strange person. Other times they are only comfortable in their own comfort zones and coming out of that comport zone will put them in an uncomfortable situation.

Because they don't think they'll have anything in common with them so they won't have anything to talk about.
